In 1947 India gained independence and the artists of the country, a sense of freedom. Four prominent artists from Bombay - Souza, Ara, Raza and Husain started the Progressive Artists Group which aimed at being contemporary yet Indian in spirit. The Bhulabhai Desai Auditorium became, in the sixties, a creative hotspot where artists would mingle, interact and create innovative works of art. The seventies saw artists such as Atul Dodiya flourish and gain recognition for expression of their artistic vision. However, it was only in the 1980 that art in Bombay received media hype and was spoken of as an investment. In the past seven years art in the city has seen an explosion both in terms of creativity and exposure. | |
