Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh, is tucked away in the foothills of the Greater Himalayas. Orophiles are very fond of this quaint little town which exhibits a very unique colonial charm against the backdrop of snow-clad Himalayan peaks. Shimla has also been featured in several Bollywood films and therefore allures cinephiles all over the world. The town sees pleasant weather during summers and severely cold winters with temperatures dropping to an average of 6-7 degrees celsius. However, that does not deter tourists from pouring in to experience snow falls which turn the town into a white haven. Shimla is therefore suitable for a visit any time of the year.
Here we have curated a convenient 3-day itinerary for your trip to this beautiful town.
Here we have curated a convenient 3-day itinerary for your trip to this beautiful town.
Day 1
Travelling to Shimla from either Delhi or Chandigarh is fairly simple. You can opt for public transport such as AC Sleeper Buses which take around 7-10 hours to reach Shimla from Delhi. You can also turn the journey into a delightful road trip if you choose to drive yourself to the hill station. There is a limited number of flights connecting Delhi to Shimla’s airport at Jubbarhatti. For a refined experience, you can board the Heritage Kalka-Shimla narrow Gauge Train which travels through a picturesque route through valleys and mountains. To reach Kalka Railway Station from Delhi, the Kalka Express is the best option.
On reaching Shimla, you can check-in to your hotel, keep your luggage and freshen up. While Shimla is home to several exquisite hotels and resorts, very few offer the facilities, the conveniences and the luxuries that The Orchid Hotel welcomes you to. Our 5-star hotel comes with all the modernities one would expect to find with the rating and therefore contributes to a memorable stay in Shimla. After freshening up, head over to our rooftop restaurant- The House of Glass. Indulge in a fulfilling meal while being surrounded by the mesmerising views of the valley and the mountains. After feasting, take a short drive of about 30 minutes to reach The Mall Road. Cars are not allowed beyond a certain limit to maintain a peaceful ambience. Mall Road is a major shopping hub and teems with activity during the evening. You might catch local performers in their acts of music or dance. Explore the local restaurants for dinner to taste the native flavours of Shimla before heading back to your hotel.
Day 2
Begin your mornings in Shimla with a hearty breakfast at Cafe Vindhyas where we predominantly serve South Indian delicacies. However, if you are in the mood for some pancakes, our chef special American Pancakes will definitely cater to your cravings. With a happy and full belly embark on your first round of sightseeing. The Heritage Walk conducted by Raaj Bhasin requires bookings in advance as it is a highly sought after aspect of any Shimla trip itinerary. The 5 km walk starting from Mall Road will take you around the famous vintage spots in the town including St Andrew’s Church, Gorton Castle, The State Museum, the All India Radio building and the Central Telegraph Office. The walk ends around afternoon when you can make your way to any local restaurant for lunch. In the evening, you can undertake an excursion to Chadwick Falls. Nestled amidst the lush greenery of the Glen Hills, Chadwick Falls is a sight to behold. Cascading down a height of almost 100 metres, the waterfall creates a blanket of mist around it and makes for a surreal picture.
Day 3
For the third day in your Shimla tour itinerary, take a short drive to Kufri early in the morning. Kufri is a neighbouring hill station perched atop an elevation of 9000 feet. The petite town offers spell-binding panoramas of the Himalayas and gives you an opportunity to take a peek into the lifestyle of the local people. Your visit to Kufri must include Mohasu Peak, Fagu and the Himalayan National Park. Chail is about an hour's drive away from Kufri. This quaint village is home to the world’s highest cricket ground. Popular tourist attractions here include the Chail Palace and the Chail Wildlife Sanctuary. You should be able to cover both Kufri and Chail by evening and return to your hotel without feeling exhausted. Spend your last night in Shimla shopping for souvenirs at The Mall, The Ridge or any local store. Head over to Harrington Bar for a relaxing evening and an indulgent dinner before turning in for the day.
