Located over 6,000 feet above sea level, Manali is a mesmerising town in the Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh that attracts scores of travellers throughout the year. The town has served as a seat for several mythological stories and was a part of the ancient trade routes connecting Central Asia and India. Manali's transformation from a trade centre to a renowned tourist destination is a relatively recent phenomenon. The post-independence era witnessed a surge in domestic tourism. This led to the popularity of hill stations like Manali becoming sought-after retreats for escaping the scorching plains.

Adventure enthusiasts and backpackers found their paradise in Manali as they flocked to this hill station to embark on treks, go paragliding, skiing, and unwinding in the Himalayas. Today, Manali has transitioned from a backpacker's haven to a family-friendly destination, with the emergence of luxury resorts and hotels widening the pool of visitors. Fortunately, the town has managed to retain its charm and authenticity, making it the perfect blend of old-world allure and modernity. Here are some destinations that you need to tick off your list of Manali tourist places:

Jogini Falls

A short trek through apple orchards and pine forests will lead you to Jogini Falls, a hidden gem in Manali. The relatively easy trek leads through areas where you can rest and sip on coffee from the cafes along the way and indulge in a plate of Maggi or two. Upon reaching the falls, you will be left mesmerised by the beauty of the area, as the water cascades from a height of around 150 feet. The site of the waterfall is a religious area and there is a temple dedicated to Goddess Jogini, hence the sacred site also attracts devotees along with nature lovers.

Hidimba Devi Temple

Dedicated to Hidimbi Devi, the wife of Bhima from the epic Mahabharata, the Hadimba temple stands as a unique blend of mythology, history, and architectural brilliance. Nestled amidst a cedar forest in Manali, this temple stands tall, its architecture a blend of Hindu and Buddhist styles. It houses no idol, but a rock formation is worshipped as the deity here; since it is believed that Hidimbi Devi meditated here in the cave before marrying Bhima. This temple is one of the most important places to visit when it comes to Manali tourism, as it is a historically significant site that offers a window into the beliefs of the locals.

Rohtang Pass

Rohtang Pass is accessible only during a small portion of the year from May to November, as it is covered in snow for the rest of the year. The high mountain pass connects the eastern Kullu Valley in Himachal Pradesh to the Lahaul and Spiti districts. The journey through the pass is a thrilling adventure that offers mesmerising views of the glaciers, snow-capped mountain peaks, and the Chandra River. Rohtang Pass is a popular tourist destination and the increased traffic has led to some environmental concerns lately. You will need a permit to visit this pass which is best obtained through designated counters or online. Take precautions and acclimatise your body to the height before you set off for the pass since it is at a high altitude.
